The simple medical resume template is designed for medical students, residents, and practicing physicians who want a single-page format for applications where a full curriculum vitae would be longer than the role calls for. Hospital recruiting offices, group practices, locum agencies, and fellowship programs prefer a focused resume that puts education, licensure, and clinical work in front of the reader. The two-column layout gathers professional memberships, awards, skills, volunteer experience, and languages into a secondary column so the primary credentials stay prominent for the reviewer.

The single-page format is intended for medical students applying for clerkships and residency, residents applying for fellowships, and early-career attending physicians applying for clinical positions. Senior physicians with extensive publications, grants, and committee work usually shift to a longer medical CV format for academic and credentialing reviews.

Medical hiring runs through verification at multiple stages. The hospital recruiter, the credentialing office, the medical staff committee, and sometimes a fellowship director read the resume with different priorities. Credentials should be easy to confirm, and clinical experience should be easy to follow. A clean, uncluttered layout moves through this chain faster than a heavily designed one, and the simple medical resume template keeps the writer focused on what matters most for the specific position.

Walkthrough of the Medical Resume Template

Every entry on a medical resume must be verifiable. Credentialing offices cross-check licenses against state board records, board certification against ABMS or AOA registries, and clinical experience against the institutions named. The template is less about persuading the reader and more about presenting an accurate record that holds up under cross-reference.

Photo and Career Statement

The name appears with the medical degree credential after it. Medical students close to graduation can use “MS3” or “MS4” alongside their school name. Residents and attending physicians typically include “MD,” “DO,” “MBBS,” or another degree. Trainees applying through ERAS often add a current PGY level after the name, which is a fine practice on the resume itself.

The career statement runs two to three lines and states the specialty, the type of position being sought, and one concrete strength. “Dedicated physician with strong work ethic seeking opportunity to grow” reads as filler. “Internal medicine resident applying for a cardiology fellowship, with 14 months of CCU rotations and two co-authored publications in heart failure outcomes” puts something specific in front of the reviewer to anchor on.

Photos on resumes are accepted in international hiring contexts (UK, Europe, Middle East, parts of Asia) and are common in academic medicine where headshots run alongside applications. In the United States, employers screening for clinical positions typically request resumes that omit photos to reduce bias exposure. If the role is US-based and the employer has not asked for a photo, replace the circular image with an extended career statement or one additional credential line. The template is editable, and removing the photo is a single deletion.

Education and Licensure

The education section is the first credential because medical employers verify schooling before anything else. List the degree (MD, DO, MBBS, MBChB, BDS, PharmD, etc.), the institution, the location, and the year range. For medical students and residents, include the expected graduation year and any clerkships, honors thesis, or graduation distinctions. Attending physicians can reorder the sections so that clinical work leads and education follows once practice experience becomes the lead credential.

The licensure and certification section comes immediately after education, and credentialing offices spend the most time here. Each entry names the license or certification (state medical license, DEA registration, board certification, ACLS, BLS, etc.), the issuing organization, the state or jurisdiction, and the active date range. A finished line reads “Texas Medical License, Texas Medical Board, 2020 to Present” or “Board Certified, Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine, 2022 to Present.” List active credentials first, then expired or in-progress certifications. Accuracy on dates and issuing body matters more than length. A reviewer cross-checks license numbers against state board records, and mismatched dates create credentialing delays.

Clinical Experience and Research

Clinical experience is the substantive heart of the medical resume. Each entry covers the job title or rotation name, the hospital or clinic, the city, and a brief description of the patient population, specialty area, and primary responsibilities. Medical students and residents describe rotations and electives with the number of weeks, the supervising attending, and the specific procedures or conditions encountered. Attending physicians describe their position, patient volume (patients per week, surgeries per year, etc.), and any subspecialty work.

Quantify where possible. “Managed inpatient internal medicine service with an average census of 12 patients” lands with more weight than “Provided care to internal medicine patients.” Numbers are easier to compare against the position being applied to.

Research experience and the publications section work together. Each research entry includes the project title, your role (principal investigator, research assistant, co-investigator), the institution, and a brief description of the work and any outcomes. For publications, use one citation style throughout (AMA, Vancouver, or NLM), and list peer-reviewed publications first, then conference presentations, then poster sessions. Medical students and early-career residents may list only one or two posters in this section, which is fully expected at that stage.

Memberships and References

The secondary column gathers context that fills out the main credentials. Professional memberships list the association (AMA, ACP, AAFP, RCP, BMA, etc.), membership status (active, fellow), and join year. Awards and honors entries cover the year, the award name, and the granting organization. The skills section is the place for specialized clinical competencies (procedures performed, EMR systems used, certifications that go beyond what’s in the licensure section). Volunteer experience demonstrates community engagement, which carries weight for residency applicants in particular. Languages should list each language with a proficiency level (basic, conversational, fluent, native).

Most general resumes drop the references section entirely or replace it with “available on request.” Medical resumes are different. Hiring committees and credentialing offices often want named references with current contact details on the initial submission, especially for fellowship and attending positions. List three to five references who can speak to clinical performance, such as program directors, attending physicians who supervised rotations, research mentors, or department chairs. Ask permission first, and send each reference a copy of the resume and the position description before listing them.

Choosing Between Word and Google Docs

The simple medical resume template is editable in Word and Google Docs. Word is the longstanding standard at hospital HR offices, works offline, and is what most hospital systems expect when they ask for an editable resume. Google Docs is easier when a mentor, program director, or co-applicant wants to leave comments on a shared link before submission. Both formats render the two-column layout identically, and switching between them later does not change the design.

Export the final resume to PDF before sending. Application portals (ERAS, hospital recruiting systems, fellowship match) read PDF natively, and the format preserves the two-column layout, section headings, and any photo placement across different versions of Word and across browsers. Hospital recruiting platforms generally read PDFs directly rather than running them through automated screening, so the two-column layout reaches the reviewer intact. The issues that come up with corporate ATS pipelines rarely apply to medical hiring, and for the rare clinical employer that uses a corporate-style ATS, a single-column version of the resume is worth keeping as a backup.
