How to Use This Attorney Resume Template

The way an attorney builds a resume shifts based on practice area and seniority. Litigators are judged on cases handled, motions argued, and trial experience. Transactional attorneys are judged on deal volume, transaction size, and counterparties. Regulatory and compliance attorneys are judged on agency exposure and subject matter familiarity. Promotions within a firm should be visible: list each title under the firm name with its own date range rather than collapsing the entire tenure into a single line.

Practice Areas and Technical Skills

The expertise column signals practice depth that the work experience section cannot convey directly. Use precise practice area names that match how the legal market refers to them. “Civil litigation” is broad; “commercial litigation,” “employment defense,” or “products liability defense” tells a recruiter what kind of work you have actually done. Software literacy belongs here too where it is meaningful for the role: Westlaw, Lexis, Relativity, Everlaw, iManage, and contract lifecycle management platforms. Foreign language fluency at working or professional level is worth listing if it connects to your practice, especially for international arbitration, immigration, or cross-border transactions.

Before submitting to a target firm, read three to five recent associate bios on the firm’s website and audit your skills list against the practice area phrasing those bios use. Firms tend to describe their own work with internal vocabulary, and matching that vocabulary positions your resume to read as a match before anyone reads a full sentence.

Adapting for Practice Type and Submission Channel

The same attorney resume template can carry an associate, a senior litigator, an in-house counsel, or a government attorney, but the emphasis inside each section should shift based on the destination and how the resume reaches the reader.

Career Path and Role Type

For firm-to-firm moves, the template’s emphasis on case work and practice area depth is already in the right place. Keep matter descriptions detailed and lead with the substance of your legal work.

For in-house counsel applications, rewrite the summary to read less like a litigator’s bio and more like a business partner’s. In-house hiring teams care about commercial judgment, working alongside non-lawyers in finance, product, and compliance, and translating legal risk into business decisions. Shorten the matter-by-matter case descriptions in the experience section and replace them with outcomes that mattered to the business, such as deals closed, regulatory matters resolved, or product launches advised on.

For government and agency roles, the priorities shift again. Emphasize public service motivation in the summary, list the agencies you have worked with, and describe case dispositions, meaning settlements, dismissals, or verdicts, rather than client wins. If you hold an active security clearance, add a short line near the contact details with the clearance level and status.

For judicial clerkship applications, this layout may not be the right format. Clerkship resumes are typically brief, lead heavily with law school credentials, journal work, and writing experience, and place academic distinctions above professional work history. A simpler academic-focused layout will read better for those applications.

ATS and Print Considerations

ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System, the software that firms and job boards use to scan resumes before a human reviews them. These systems read text in a top-to-bottom, left-to-right pass and can sometimes misread two-column layouts by jumbling the reading order.
